About Us

Kohat is a family-owned business situated near Ongerup in the South-East coastal region of Western Australia.  Greg, Sarah and Rivers Hyde own and manage the commercial and stud operations.  The farming environment is characterised by dry hot summers and cool wet (in a good year!) winters.  We receive an average annual rainfall of 350-400mm.  We are a mixed cropping and sheep property and find the balance of these enterprises to be well suited to the farm.

We really enjoy the challenge of breeding sheep that are perfectly suited to the Western Australian farming environment and beyond.  For many years we have been searching the genetic pool across Australia to bring the best quality rams into our White Suffolk stud.  We have extensively used artificial insemination to access the best stud rams that we can.  In recent times we have applied the same focus to our Merino ram breeding program.

All of our ram breeding decisions are made using a combination of ASBVs and visual appraisal across both studs. For both the White Suffolk and Poll Merino studs, Kohat’s mission is to breed a commercially relevant sheep that can stand up to our long dry spells and really flourish when things are good.
